Contributing to China’s National Power Plant Condensate Filtration Standards: Our Role in CSEE 2022 Standard Development

Industry standards are the foundation on which reliable filtration practices are built. When a national professional body commissions the drafting of technical guidelines, it selects participants on the basis of demonstrated expertise, practical operating experience, and the credibility of their engineering knowledge within the sector. Inclusion in such a process is not a commercial arrangement; it is a recognition of technical standing.

In 2022, we were invited to participate in a standards drafting initiative organized by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE), under the oversight of the Power Chemistry Professional Committee. The project was initiated by Xi’an Thermal Power Research Institute Co., Ltd., one of China’s leading authorities in thermal power engineering and water chemistry research, and brought together a consortium of major industry participants. Co-drafting organizations included Huaneng Hunan Yueyang Power Generation Co., Ltd., Huaneng Jingmen Thermal Power Co., Ltd., Huaneng Jiuquan Power Generation Co., Ltd., Huaneng International Power Co., Ltd. Dalian Power Plant, Inner Mongolia Juda Power Generation Co., Ltd., Inner Mongolia Shangdu Power Generation Co., Ltd., Guoneng Nanjing Electric Power Testing and Research Co., Ltd., RunDian Energy Science and Technology Co., Ltd., and the Shanghai Representative Office of Greif Technology (USA).

The initiative resulted in the drafting of three technical guidelines covering the operation and maintenance of condensate fine treatment systems in power plants. The first standard addresses tube-type filters, the second covers powder-coated filters, and the third focuses on high-flow filters. Together, these three documents provide a comprehensive operational and maintenance framework for the primary condensate polishing technologies used across China’s thermal power generation fleet, including the filtration equipment categories most critical to protecting boiler and turbine integrity in supercritical and ultra-supercritical generating units.

Condensate fine treatment is one of the most technically demanding filtration applications in power generation. The condensate stream must be maintained within strict water quality limits across all operational phases, from unit startup through deep load regulation to sustained full-load operation, with contamination limits measured at the parts-per-billion level. The filter elements used in these systems, including our PHFZ series polypropylene pleated cartridges designed specifically for power plant boiler condensate applications, must perform reliably under elevated temperature and pressure conditions while supporting backwashable operation across repeated cycles. Establishing clear, nationally consistent guidelines for how these systems should be operated and maintained has direct implications for generating unit reliability, boiler and turbine service life, and the overall safety of condensate treatment circuits across the industry.

Our participation in the CSEE standards drafting process reflects the depth of our technical engagement in the power generation filtration sector and the recognition of that expertise by China’s leading power engineering institutions. The resulting standards provide a reference framework that will guide condensate filtration practice across thermal power facilities throughout the country for years to come.
