Skid-Mounted Stainless Steel Filter Housing Solution: Resolving Bypass Failure and Increasing System Flow Capacity

A filtration system is only as effective as the integrity of its housing. When a filter housing fails to form a proper seal around the cartridge, the result is bypass, where unfiltered media circumvents the filter element entirely and passes directly into the downstream process.

A stainless steel filter housing is a pressure vessel that holds one or more filter elements (cartridges or bags) in a sealed chamber. Liquid enters through the inlet, passes through the element at a specific micron rating, and exits as filtrate. Contaminants are captured until the element is replaced.

Stainless steel filter housings offer four main benefits: pressure stability (SS304 and SS316L withstand up to 31.7 MPa), effective prefiltration, simple operation with quick cartridge changeout or optional backwash, and long-term cost savings by protecting downstream equipment.

Power plants, seawater desalination, chemical and petrochemical, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, pulp and paper, automotive, and agriculture. They serve as prefiltration before reverse osmosis and for protecting downstream equipment.

Pullner housings accept Type 222, Type 226, double flush end, and similar cartridges in 10″, 20″, 30″, 40″, 60″, and 70″ lengths. Compatible with Pullner and Pall, 3M, and Parker replacement cartridges. Capacity from 1 to 150 cartridges. See the specifications table above for details.

SS304, SS316L, duplex steel, super duplex, or carbon steel. SS316L is recommended for corrosive and seawater applications; SS304 for most industrial uses. Material selection depends on operating conditions.

Replace when differential pressure rises (check the pressure gauge). With backwash, try backwashing first; if flow stays low after repeated washing, replace the elements. Without backwash, shut down, open the housing, and replace the elements.

  1. Shut down and isolate the housing.
  2. Open the vent to relieve pressure.
  3. Remove the cover and old element.
  4. Inspect the new element (O-ring, structure).
  5. Install the new element, close the vent, and restart.
