RO membranes can develop minor integrity issues over time, and bacterial regrowth is possible in the post-RO system if adequate downstream polishing is not in place. For water treatment production lines operating under strict quality requirements, the detection of bacteria in treated water samples is a prompt to strengthen the filtration process, not an indication that the upstream RO system has failed entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A water treatment facility operator in Saudi Arabia identified bacterial contamination in their treated water samples and determined that an additional sterilizing-grade filtration stage was required downstream of their existing reverse osmosis system. The client had previously used polyethersulfone (PES) membrane filter cartridges from Millipore, a globally recognized brand with an established performance record in precision liquid filtration, and was satisfied with the results. However, the cost of the original Millipore cartridges was a significant operational expense, and the client sought a manufacturer capable of supplying an equivalent product at a more competitive price point. Before approaching us, the client had evaluated multiple alternative suppliers, but none had produced a cartridge that met their specific bacterial retention and flow performance requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our engineering team undertook a structured development process upon receiving the client&#8217;s enquiry. The operating conditions of the downstream filtration stage were reviewed in detail, including system pressure, flow rate, and the bacterial retention standard required. Based on this assessment, we formulated an initial PES membrane media composition targeting the sterilizing-grade performance characteristics of the original Millipore cartridge, with an asymmetric pore structure designed to maximize dirt holding capacity and throughput while achieving the required 0.22 \u00b5m bacterial retention rating. Laboratory validation of the initial formulation was completed in-house before samples were prepared and dispatched to the client for on-site testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first round of client testing did not meet the required performance standard. Rather than treating this as a rejection, our team used the usage data and test results provided by the client to identify where the initial media composition required adjustment. The membrane formulation was revised and subjected to a second round of laboratory validation before a new sample set was produced and sent for client evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second round of testing met the client&#8217;s requirements in full. Bacterial retention performance matched the sterilizing-grade standard previously achieved with the Millipore cartridges; flow characteristics were acceptable for the downstream filtration stage, and the cost of our solution represented a meaningful reduction in ongoing consumable expenditure. The client placed a formal purchase order following confirmation of the test results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project demonstrates the value of an iterative, data-driven development process in custom membrane filtration.
